Scenic drive notes
Roads are single-track with passing places. Allow 90 minutes for the 40 km drive between Port Ellen and Bruichladdich. Take the CalMac ferry from Kennacraig (2 h 20 min) and book it months ahead.
Petrol stations are limited — fill in Bowmore.
Tasting-room etiquette
Book distillery tours in advance — many are small-group only. Never drive after a tasting: ask for a 'driver's dram' to take home. Don’t add water to a cask-strength sample before smelling it neat.
Where to stay
Port Charlotte Hotel — seafront; The Machrie — golf links and a restaurant; small self-catering cottages around Port Ellen.
