Flavour wheel
THE STORY
Laphroaig malts part of its own barley on site and dries it over peat fires, then distils on the shore of Islay’s south coast. The result is a bold, unmistakable dram: iodine, smoke and a surprising ribbon of sweetness.
Bonfire smoke, iodine, wet stone, hints of vanilla and lemon peel.
Big peat, salted caramel, black pepper, a warm herbal sweetness.
Long, drying and smoky with a lingering sea-salt tang.
Aging process
Ten years in refill and first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, laid down in warehouses a few metres from the Atlantic. Sea air and slow, cool maturation temper the peat without removing it.
Terroir & region
Islay peat is mossy and maritime, laced with seaweed and heather. Soft local water from the Kilbride stream carries a faint peaty tint into the mash.
WHAT MEMBERS FOUND
Still the benchmark
Peat, iodine and a surprising sweetness. After a decade of drinking it, this is the dram I come back to every winter.
Smoke with a soul
A smoky hug. I add one drop of water and the lemon peel arrives.
Mumbai monsoon dram
Perfect on a rainy evening on the balcony with a loud thunderstorm.
